A.R. Penck is a German artist personality: in the early 1950s, he was considered the Rembrandt of Eastern Germany. While many of his colleagues faithfully stuck to the traditional line, Penck newly oriented himself and banned the classic visual and formal language of socialist realism from his work. Powerful strokes, formed into abstract figures and symbols were from then on the subject of his works. They pick human feelings and existential themes such as fear or lust out as a central theme. Penck stands for the modernization of German painting. Since 1989 he has benn professor at the Art Academy Düsseldorf.
